Neve Tzedek Dreams

Carmela Ben yishay presents A multi-field performance of poetry acting and dancing. The specificity of this performance lies in the opening of a personal circle of roots.

Carmela Ben yishay fulfills here a triple functions: that of poet and text writer of the Cycle of Poems, of performer and of the real authentic figure reconstructing her childhood in the Neveh Tzedek neighborhood.

This performance is based on "The cycle of Neveh Tzedek Poems" from her poetry book "Time of Viniard" published at "Bimat Kedem".

In this performance Carmela brings sights, odours, voices and sounds from the magic neighborhood, that reflect by means of a poetic documentation fragments of life from the past. 

 

"My Beloved"- A performance of chants "Piyutim"

Description:
Carmela Ben Yishay: poetess, chant singer and multi-disciplinary stage performer, presents a musical rang from the Hebrew chant. The show "My Beloved" includes sacred chants - "Piyutim" - from the Hebrew scriptures and folk tunes, Sabbath chants, holiday and celebration songs, presented in the different versions of the Jewish communities: Babylonian (Iraqi), Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Yemenite etc., combined with modern arrangements, as well as chants from Carmela's original poems written and composed in the spirit of traditional chant throughout the generations as a unique phenomenon in the sacred Hebrew chant and song.
Carmela and the writer Orzion Yishai have been working together for many years on special projects, integrating Carmela's artisic performance and unique presentation with Orzion's profound literary knowledge in Judaism.

A double room in a hotel, except in Los Angeles, will stay with family

Special attractions:
The show can be held in any auditorium with an appropriate sound system, in cultural centers, Israeli centers, unique centers, musical centers, for students, teachers and the general public. The show is suitable for festivals, public and private institutions.

Technical specifications:
A sound system suited for the size of the auditorium, two microphones.
There is a possibility to perform in an artist's studio, in high schools and in academy halls.

Enclosed are documents, pictures, criticism. A disk with a musical sample can be sent.

Touching Innocence – 2002 inclusively

A multi-lingual show in Hebrew, Arabic, Ladino and Turkish, based o the poetry cycle Touching Innocence from the book "Time of the Vineyard". This work is a contexture of oriental mystic elements deeply rooted in the ancient Eastern reality. Sufic folk music combined with original music in a poetic love-chat and nature poetry of Mediterranean languages. It was performed in the International Festival of Mediterranean Languages in the Be'er Sheva University and in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in the Confederation House in Jerusalem, in the Susan Dellal Ethnic Center etc. It is approved by Omanut La'am (Folk Art).

 

Babylonian Offering - 2004 inclusively

This show presents the history of the ancient Jewish Babylonian community in Bagdad since the Biblical days of the banks of the Tigris – "On the rivers of Babylon…" – up to Carmela's family story and their immigration to Israel. The show is based on memories and stories of her parents and on grandfather's memories.
It is a combination of artistic poetry and folklore.

It was performed in the Center of the Babylon Jews legacy.

 

Tongues of Tattoo
A show based on the poem Tattoo Tongues on the Holocaust. It was accepted to the Israel Festival 1989-1997.

It was performed in the house of Yad Labanim (Memorial Center) in Haifa, in the Artists' Center in Halle, Germany, in a writers' convention in Sachsen, Germany, in a Manhattan gallery and in Lodz, Poland.

 

Tunes from the Yard
Chant and singing evenings in Carmela's yard Saturday nights during the summer months, on the last Saturday of the month.
